What does Paper Affinity specialize in?
Personal and small business websites, microsites, stand-alone web graphics (static or animated), and occasionally blog template customization. Building websites from scratch, redesigns, and tweaking previous versions are all welcome.
How much do you charge for a website?
Considerably less than a design agency, that’s for sure. I go by a fixed hourly rate for any project with the exception of urgent requests, which will naturally be more pricey. Assuming you are not looking to put out a fire, your total will depend on how elaborate you would like your website to be. It varies quite a bit, so please feel free to request a quote. And don’t despair if your budget is tight—chances are, we’ll be able to come up with something that works for you. Go ahead and ask what Paper Affinity can do for you!
How long does it take?
Anywhere between 1-6 months. Generally, even “simple” websites require several months. First, because even the plainest website involves a lot of work. Second, because you will be investing in quality, not a hack job. I want you to be happy with what you paid for. If you are and your website is a success, I will consider my mission fulfilled. And we will have made the internet a slightly better place. :)
I need a quick website that I can expand later.
No problem. I can assemble a simplified version of the website you envision and you can come back to it whenever you’re ready, as long as it is stored on a domain you have purchased. That is: Paper Affinity does not host client websites.
What will I have to do?
Communicate your idea as clearly as possible (reference websites are helpful), provide the content (namely, text and images), then sit back and watch your website unfold.
In short, Paper Affinity offers the following services:
›Website design and development
›Fast and thorough technical support (not host registration, however)
›Speedy touchup edits
›Free updates after the website is completeIf this sounds like your cup of tea, contact me!
What can you teach me?
If you are a beginner, the essentials and the best practices. Everything from understanding how the web works, what tools you need to built a website, what languages to implement, basic optimal design strategies, to publishing the finished product. If you already have some experience and would like a refresher, tips, or help with your code, I can fill you in on whatever you are missing—be it HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, cross-browser compatibly hacks, or simply helping you tweak your code to make your website function the way you would like it to.
How much do you charge?
I use a fixed hourly rate. It’s very reasonable for the multitude of skills and tricks I can teach you. I have been doing web design for 10 years and know a lot. Trust me, you won’t regret a cent.
Where do you tutor?
I am currently in the Twin Cities area (Minnesota), so within a reasonable distance from my place of residence. Schools and libraries are good. Let’s negotiate over the phone—it’s easier.
What times are you available?
Late mornings to early evenings on weekends. Occasionally weekdays.
What will I have to do?
Put on your thinking cap and follow along. Be open to new information and don’t be afraid to get a little frustrated, as you will basically be learning several new languages and a new way of thinking. It’s a challenge, but a fun and extremely rewarding one once you see how valuable these skills can be.
Do you assign homework?
Nope, but there are definitely benefits to practicing on your own: it can help you absorb new information better as well as discover quirks you may not encounter under supervision. Of course, it’s perfectly fine if you are not comfortable venturing on your own. I will assist you until you have acquired enough confidence.
What age ranges do you tutor?
Generally, adults.
